Technology Manager
School of Visual Arts
POSITION OVERVIEW: Oversee the technology operations of the ID:BE department. Manage and execute technology budget controls, including acquisitions and technology leases. Manage server systems; create system client images and deployment for Windows-based network architecture on Mac desktops and Windows-native PCs. Provide technical and administrative support with department exhibitions, lecture series, and special programs and projects.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Technology Systems Support & Maintenance:
- Provide computer hardware and software support for the department, including classrooms, labs, administrative offices, and individual studio desktops
- Installation and maintenance of all software, hardware, and peripherals (printers, scanners, laser cutter, and plotter)
- Develop, deploy and manage server and local and networked client systems
- Perform routine maintenance checks and update installs on servers, local and networked client systems
- Conduct hardware/software workshops for department students, faculty, and staff on computer lab, print room, and studio desktop policies and procedures
- Address and solve student, faculty, and staff issues regarding desktop, software, hardware, and peripheral equipment
- Enforce policies and procedures for the computer lab, print room, and studio desktops
- Develop and maintain a backup system of all departmental digital assets
- Facilitate and sustain curriculum-specific hardware and software needs of instructors, such as VR-enabled “smart room,” Lumion and 3D rendering, and web-specific class projects
- Create and manage departmental online and multi-media projects, including department website, social media communications, and department educational technology
- Establish and implement security measures to protect systems and data from intrusion/unwanted data change
- Liaison with IT department for advanced hardware and software troubleshooting issues
- Manage off-site equipment repairs
- Maintain department keycard access system
Management and Planning:
- Evaluate, recommend and implement future network architecture and equipment needs based on curriculum, departmental growth, and existing technology trends
- Lead and develop a technical budget; create and oversee the department’s technical leases
- Solicit vendor estimates for technology purchases and submit online requisitions for approval
- Train student worker(s) with departmental policies regarding technology and equipment including basic hardware/software installation, general troubleshooting
- Provide leadership, support, and guidance with all technical aspects of department exhibitions and special programs and projects, including large format printing, media requirements (projections, monitors, sound), and occasional on-site installation
- Assist faculty and students through the exhibition process as it relates to department technology, resources, and equipment
- Manage a digital archive and database of all current students and alums class work
- Maintain positive and professional relationships with other departments acting as principal technology and communications liaison
- Provide technical direction and support to the Director of Operations and Chair on various department initiatives and events
Administrative:
- Support the Department Chair and the Director of Operations in facilitating the organization and production of presentations for department lectures, special programs, and events, and departmental promotional materials
- Oversee the maintenance of equipment for student use; including maintaining the inventory for all equipment, assets, and consumables
- Attend weekly/daily meetings with the director of operations and department chair to provide project updates and prioritize assignments
- Assist the Director of Operations with the management and supervision of 1-2 student workers per semester
- Liaison with outside vendors and coordinate with the director of operations on purchase requests.
- Purchase department consumables and equipment for students, faculty, and staff
- Conduct P-card purchases and submit requisitions for approval and reconcile monthly
- Work with purchasing department to develop leases for equipment; coordinate and accept deliveries with vendors
- Maintain several databases for mailings, promotions, equipment loan, etc.
- Provide general reception to the department, meet and assist students and visitors and conduct department tours
- Maintain repair records, inventories of hardware/software
- Create and maintain best practices guide for various hardware and software for faculty and students
- Provide support for the department's CIDA accreditation process (6-year cycle)
- Oversee department website and social media applications
- Perform other administrative duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS:
- BFA Degree required, in computer science or computer arts or related field, Master’s degree preferred,
- 2-3 years of experience managing technology in an academic or similar networked environment
- Knowledge of Windows OS and Windows Server is required; knowledge of Apple OS systems is necessary. Essential skills include creating system images and resolving hardware and software conflicts
- Working knowledge of all Adobe Creative Cloud, Lightroom, AutoDesk Design suite, I.e., AutoCAD, Revit, 3-DMax, Rhino, Sketchup, & rendering software (V-Ray, Lumion, Enscape)
- Excellent managerial abilities, communication skills, and the ability to multitask
- Strong interpersonal skills; must be able to represent the college and the department professionally and work with students and faculty to resolve problems
- Must be able to work independently, be detail-oriented
- Knowledge of interior design/architecture a plus
