Senior Architectural Planner, Campus Planning

Position Summary
The Office of Campus Planning seeks a Senior Architectural Planner to lead strategic campus planning and space management initiatives aligned with the University’s long-term goals. Reporting to the Campus Planning Manager, this role will focus on shaping the physical campus environment to support the institution’s academic, research, and community missions. This individual will play a key role in aligning budget and capital facilities planning with the University’s strategic priorities.
This role will include but not be limited to the following responsibilities:
- Strategic Planning & Visioning
- Develop and implement long-range campus master plans, aligning physical infrastructure and campus facilities with institutional goals.
- Engage in strategic planning efforts to ensure the campus’s growth and facilities adapt to changing academic and operational needs.
- Space & Facilities Planning
- Conduct space utilization studies to assess current use of facilities and recommend ways to optimize space.
- Plan for new construction, renovations, and expansions, ensuring they support academic and research goals and are financially feasible.
- Coordinate with faculty and administrative units to understand their needs and translate their needs into programmatic requirements.
- Sustainability & Environmental Stewardship
- Integrate sustainable design principles in planning projects to meet institutional sustainability goals.
- Promote environmentally responsible planning practices in coordination with the University goals and SUCF directives.
- Campus-Community Engagement
- Foster partnerships with local governments, businesses, and community organizations to promote mutually beneficial development.
- Work with community stakeholders to ensure campus planning aligns with the needs and values of the surrounding community.
- Regulatory and Compliance Management
- Ensuring campus planning projects comply with the University’s Comprehensive Physical Plan and align with university space planning and design standards.
- Coordinate with colleagues on campus to adhere to safety and accessibility standards.
- Project Management & Implementation
- Oversee the planning, design, and construction phases of campus development projects.
- Collaborate with architects, engineers, and project managers to ensure projects meet design intent, budget, and timeline.
- Data Analysis & Reporting
- Utilize data on space utilization, student demographics, enrollment trends, and other metrics to inform planning decisions.
- Prepare and present reports to senior leadership and stakeholders, demonstrating how planning initiatives align with institutional objectives.
- Advisory & Collaboration Role
- Act as a resource and subject matter expert for university leadership on facilities and campus development issues.
- Collaborate across departments, including Academic Affairs, University Facilities, and Student Life (to name a few), to coordinate planning efforts.
- Build and nurture strong relationships across the University community, gaining a nuanced understanding of diverse needs and navigating complex bureaucratic systems effectively.

Minimum Qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree in architecture, planning, interior design or related degree with 3 years of experience in higher education campus planning. Equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted for the degree.
- Excellent oral, written, organizational, and interpersonal skills required.
- Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse group of staff at all levels of an organization.
- A valid Driver’s License is required.
- Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis without visa sponsorship.
Preferred Qualifications
- A master’s degree in architecture, planning, interior design or related degree with 7 years of experience in higher education campus planning and architectural programming.
- Demonstration of ability to generate architectural space programming studies, and architectural project work plans.
- New York State professional registration in architecture, or interior design preferred.
