Departmental Overview

Facilities Services works to continuously improve the campus in partnership with all members of the University community to ensure that classrooms, laboratories, and offices support teaching, learning and research. Through the efforts of over 400 dedicated staff members and serving over 10M building square feet and 1100 acres, Facilities Services includes the asset management program, custodial services, maintenance operations, engineering and technical services, environmental services, grounds operations, the Cal Zero Waste program.

Position Summary

Involves planning, organizing, coordinating and performing activities supporting exterior hard and soft scapes, including gardening, planting, landscape, grounds, playing fields, and tree maintenance, erosion control, pest management, exterior fire control projects, irrigation repair and maintenance, grounds equipment repair and maintenance.

Responsibilities

  • Trains the landscape/groundskeeping staff to maintain an orderly, safe, and efficient grounds operation.
  • Trains staff on landscape maintenance, horticultural and arboricultural best practices.
  • Trains leads on prioritization of servicing landscapes.
  • Requires knowledge in the care and use of power equipment and other landscape/groundskeeping tools.
  • Maintains proper inventory needs and purchase inventory.
  • Directs subordinates to complete assignments using established guidelines, procedures, and policies.
  • Ensures safety, hazardous materials and landscape/groundskeeping policies and procedures are adhered to by staff.
  • Enforces biohazardous materials and equipment policies and procedures.
  • Ensures that staff complete required mandatory training.
  • Responsible for performance management of direct reports.
  • Reviews and approves timecards and requests for time off.
  • Conducts annual performance reviews.
  • Has a general understanding of supervising employees in a unionized environment.
  • Maintains scheduling within prescribed budgetary guidelines.
  • May assist with budget planning and maintenance and provide input on landscape design.
  • May be responsible for coordinating programs (water abatement, weed abatement & irrigation) with various municipalities, governmental organization etc.
  • May be required to operate vehicles.


Required Qualifications

  • Working knowledge in landscape/groundskeeping services.
  • Working verbal and written communication skills in the English language, including active listening, flexibility, critical thinking, and the ability to multi-task and ensure effective time management.
  • Working decision making and reasoning skills, and ability to develop original ideas to solve problems and conduct operations analysis and quality control analysis.
  • Working, effective interpersonal and work leadership skills to provide guidance to other personnel.
  • Ability to review the design of landscape in the planning stages.
  • Solid computer application skills.
  • Ability to learn Maximo.
  • 3 years of experience as a lead or project lead.
  • 5 years in field of Horticulture or Arboriculture.
  • Experience in a unionized environment in a lead or management role.
  • Strong horticultural background (includes Plants & pest identification, plant diseases, knowledge of hydrology zones, etc.
  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time in all different weather conditions.
  • Able to frequently bend/crouch.
  • Able to frequently climb stairs/hillsides and walk on uneven ground and plant landscapes.


Preferred Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent certification.
  • Academic prep in horticulture.
  • Degree in Landscape/Horticulture and/or equivalent training/experience.


Salary & Benefits

This is a 100% full-time (40 hrs a week) exempt career position, which is paid monthly and eligible for UC Benefits.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted annual salary that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $92,000.00 - $102,000.00.
