Departmental Overview
The Hurley laboratory is interested in fundamental questions of how the interactions between proteins and membranes determine cell and organelle shape, how these processes contribute to quality control and homeostasis, how protein-membrane interactions turn on and off the signals that control essential cell processes, and how these processes go wrong in disease. The lab carriers out basic structural cell biology research that is driven primarily by cryo-EM and cryo_ET imaging, and also engages in targeted drug discovery driven by biochemical and cell-based assays and facilitated by structural approaches.
This position will contribute to the laboratory's Parkinson's disease drug discovery efforts.

Responsibilities
- Recombinant DNA subcloning into plasmid vectors
- Small and large scale preparation of plasmids
- Test and large scale transfection of suspension cell culture
- Cell culture maintenance
- Cell harvesting and lysis
- Protein purification by FPLC and affinity chromatography
- Protein quantitation using fluorescence and SDS-PAGE methods
- Assisting in enzyme assays
- Recording and documenting procedures and data
Required Qualifications
- Understands the operation of lab equipment.
- Ability to independently conducts experiments with minimal supervision or guidance
- One year of laboratory experience (may be concurrent with undergraduate study); or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
The budgeted hourly rate that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $26.52 (Step 1)
- This is a 100% full-time (40 hours per week), one-year limited position that is eligible for UC benefits.
- This position is non-exempt and paid bi-weekly.
- This position is governed by the terms and conditions in the agreement for the Research Support Professionals Unit (RX) between the University of California and the University Professional and Technical Employees (UPTE). Other Information
The automatic conversion to career status, as provided in Section B.2. above, will not occur when:
- The funding for the position is "one time" funding, of eighteen (18) months or less, or
- The employee was hired specifically to work on a short-term project lasting no more than one year.
