Overview

This role is on our Medford campus, Monday - Friday, 7:00 - 3:30pm.

The Department of Facilities Services is responsible for the efficient and cost effective operations, maintenance and management of all Tufts University facilities consisting of approximately 5 million square feet of space on three campuses (Somerville/Medford, Grafton, and Boston).

A broad range of services are provided to support the University campuses including: facility maintenance by all trades, capital maintenance, information technology systems for operations (work control, time capture, preventative maintenance), energy and utilities systems, recycling and waste management, event services, residential facilities coordination, grounds maintenance and facility condition assessment and tracking. Facilities Services plays a critical role in planning for the $30M/year deferred maintenance investment.

Related functions, which require close coordination with this department, are public and environmental health and safety, planning, design and construction of capital and deferred maintenance projects including major repairs, renovation and new construction. 


What You'll Do

Reporting to facilities management, the Boiler Mechanic I is responsible for all aspects of installation, maintenance, inspection, operation and repair of boilers/heating systems.

  • Must have experience installing, troubleshooting, and servicing boiler and heating systems.
  • The Boiler mechanic I reads blueprints, drawings and specifications to determine the layout of piping systems, steam/hot water supply networks and waste and condensate drainage systems.
  • This position performs similar or related duties as required. This position is
    considered essential as defined in the Tufts University Employee Handbook.


What We're Looking For

Basic Requirements:

  • Candidate must have current, valid Massachusetts Driver’s License
  • Must possess a current, valid Massachusetts Unrestricted Oil Burners License
  • Must possess a current Massachusetts 2nd Class Fireman’s License
  • Reading, writing and comprehension of the English language is required as well as the ability to compute addition, subtraction, multiplication and division functions using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals
  • High School diploma or equivalent is required
  • Must be able to read blueprints and have Boiler Plant experience, with focus on maintenance and controls
  • Basic computer knowledge and operation skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Trade or vocational school is strongly preferred
  • Must be mature, adaptable, and have the ability to work pleasantly and tactfully with thier fellow employees, faculty, students and staff
  • To complete jobs using the right knowledge and materials, and to do so in a safe and timely manner
  • Develop new and creative ways of keeping the exterior of the buildings (campus) well maintained
  • Maintain the mindset that we are a service organization and strive to improve on service both as an individual and as part of a department. Proving to the customer that you are working in their best interests
  • 1st Class Fireman’s or 3rd Class Engineer’s License

Special Work Schedule Requirements:

  • Flexibility in work schedule required due to campus related emergencies, events occurring nights and weekends and special events such as matriculation and commencement

The pay rate for this position is $47.75 / hour.
