The Support Services organization at Tufts University delivers administrative services to schools and central units across the university's three campuses. Administrative activities that are common across the many central divisions and schools have been consolidated, allowing highly qualified teams to provide exemplary administrative support to faculty and staff. Comprising administrative support for transactional tasks in payroll, benefits administration and finance, support services is customer-focused and strives for continuous improvement and high customer satisfaction.

What You'll Do

The Payroll Tax Accountant is a member of the payroll team tasked with managing payroll tax withholding and reporting, coordinating payroll tax support for the finance team, and serving as a resource for the Tufts community to research and resolve more complex payroll tax inquiries. The payroll tax accounting team works collaboratively with the finance tax and compliance teams managing multi-state payroll tax compliance in support of the Tufts flexible work program. The payroll tax accounting team also provides support for foreign national students’ and scholars’ tax status and treaty eligibility.  The Payroll Tax Accountant will provide support for processing third party payments to tax authorities and benefit program vendors.  S/he will support the payroll tax accounting team’s responsibility for accurate accounting entries ensuring that payroll and benefit general ledger data is secure, accurate, and timely.  S/he will be cross trained to support the payroll tax accounting team’s activities ensuring adherence to federal and state regulations and laws, and university policies and procedures.  S/he will be involved in conducting financial, operational and compliance audits to ensure compliant planning, accounting, and control activities. 

What We're Looking For

Basic Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
  • 2-5 years related experience in finance and/or accounting, payroll tax withholding and reporting including multi-state and foreign national taxation.
  • Expertise in Payroll/Financial systems, and process analysis and control assessment.
  • Sound compliance skills and a solid understanding of GAAP.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Excellent customer service orientation and strong oral and written communication and presentation skills.
  • Able to prioritize, meet deadlines, problem-solve and research thoroughly, contribute to peer learning and collaborate in a team environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Degree in Accounting or Finance.
  • CPP preferred.
  • Experience with PeopleSoft Payroll and Financials.
  • Experience with Windstar Tax Navigator.
  • Work experience in higher education.
