This position is immediately available in the lab of Dr. Yolanda Huang (Department of Microbiology & Immunology). The lab’s research focuses on discovering new functions encoded among gut anaerobic bacteria and bacteriophages using high-throughput functional genomics. We also study bacteria-phage interactions and how phages alter bacterial physiology and microbial composition dynamics. The overall goal is to advance our understanding of the gut microbiota at the molecular level.

Research projects leverage cutting-edge techniques, including DNA barcoding, short and long-read sequencing technologies, and high-throughput functional genomics. Responsibilities will include supporting daily lab functions and research needs by purchasing reagent supplies, ensuring lab safety, maintaining instruments, and updating inventory.

The ideal candidate will also participate in the design and execution of wet lab experiments and/or computational analyses and is expected to contribute to publications. This may include bacterial genetics, molecular cloning, bacteria, and phage cultivations (aerobic and anaerobic), protein purifications, bioinformatics, and various -omic techniques. The lab is committed to the success of all members and provides close mentorship and opportunities for research and career development.

The ideal candidate will have recently obtained their BSc or MSc in microbiology, bioengineering, bioinformatics, or a related field. Experiences in any of the following areas would be an asset: bacteria and/or phage isolation and cultivation, microbial genetics, molecular biology, protein biochemistry, assay development, analytical chemistry (HPLC, MS), sequencing, and bioinformatics.

Responsibilities will include:
  • Conducting routine experiments following established protocols
  • Timely recording of experimental details and results
  • Performing data interpretations and communicating findings with the PI
  • Contributing to publications through experimental/computational work and writing
  • Participating and contributing to group meetings
  • Assisting other lab members when/where expertise is needed
  • Performing weekly lab maintenance duties including purchasing and stocking supplies
  • Completing administrative tasks

Application Instructions
Please contact Dr. Yolanda Huang (yyh@buffalo.edu) for more information or to discuss the position. Applications should include (i) a brief cover letter that highlights how your research interests and skills fit with the research themes in the lab, (ii) curriculum vitae, and (iii) contact information for three references. Review of potential candidates will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. A delayed start date is possible as well with the ideal candidate.
