Position Summary
The Center for the Arts (CFA) at the University at Buffalo, part of the College of Arts and Sciences, is seeking a Theatrical Production Technician to join our team. This early-career, hands-on position is ideal for individuals with a foundational understanding of video projection who are eager to grow their technical skills in a dynamic and supportive environment.
The CFA hosts a wide range of performances, productions, and events -spanning national tours, campus performances, academic programs, and community events. No two days are the same, offering valuable opportunities to learn and grow in a supportive team environment.
The Theatrical Production Technician plays a key role in the technical execution of events, with emphasis on video projection, multimedia systems, and Front of House audio. Responsibilities include the setup, operation, and strike of projection equipment and playback systems, while also assisting with audio, lighting, and staging as needed. Working closely with the Technical Director and production team, the technician helps ensure events run smoothly and safely, while also guiding student workers and over hire crews in effective production practices.
This position is a great fit for adaptable, curious individuals who enjoy creative problem-solving, learning by doing, and supporting meaningful experiences through the arts. The CFA is committed to professional development and offers mentorship, cross-training, and the chance to grow across technical disciplines.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Support the technical execution of a wide variety of events-including concerts, touring productions, dance performances, theatrical shows, academic activities, recitals, and special events-throughout all phases of production, from prep and load-ins to rehearsals, performances, and load-outs
- Serve as a production technician with a focus on video projection. Set up, operate, and strike A/V and multimedia equipment, including projection systems, playback systems and software (e.g. Qlab), and basic sound reinforcement for presentations, screenings, and performances
- Provide general production support across sound, lighting, and staging, including basic audio setup and mixing, lighting hang and strike, scenic and soft goods handling, and fly system assistance
- Assist with the maintenance, repair, and improvement of theatrical systems and facilities under the direction of the Technical Director and production staff
- Help train and support student employees and over hire crews in safe and effective production practices
- Promote and maintain a safe, inclusive, and respectful work environment across all production operations
- Contribute to a collaborative, team-oriented culture, and actively build technical skills through hands-on experience, mentorship, and ongoing professional development

With 30 departments, 16 academic programs and 23 centers and institutes in the arts and humanities, natural sciences and mathematics and the social sciences, the College offers more academic options than any other unit on campus.
