Position Summary

The Hazardous Materials Technician performs a wide variety of duties for Environment, Health, and Safety (EH&S). The Hazardous Waste Technician has frequent oral and written communication with professional staff (Ph.D., MD, Senior Researchers, Lab Technicians), clerical staff (secretaries and clerks), physical plant staff (cleaners, shop personnel, etc.), graduate and undergraduate students, most university departments and outside vendors. The Hazardous Materials Technician reports directly to the Hazardous Materials Supervisor.

Thus, the Technician must:
  • Communicate well with individuals.
  • Independently recognize potentially unsafe conditions.
  • Act accordingly to correct the situation.

Minimum Qualifications

  • An Associate’s degree in Chemistry or a closely related scientific area of study with a Chemistry concentration, or two years of college education with a Chemistry concentration.
  • Excellent customer service skills and good interpersonal communication skills.
  • Detailed knowledge and use of computer programs such as Word, Excel, Outlook, etc..
  • A valid New York State driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in science major with Chemistry concentration.
  • Two years’ experience in a hazardous waste management environment.
  • Creative problem solving skills are desirable.

Physical Demands

The ability to routinely and regularly lift heavy items up to fifty (50) pounds without assistance and up to 400 pounds with mechanical assistance is also necessary to perform the job requirements. The incumbent must be medically cleared and physically capable of wearing respiratory protection and other personal protective equipment.
