Departmental Overview

The Industry Alliances Office (IAO) was established in 2004 to promote campus research, education, and public service through facilitating industry sponsored research and related contract negotiation with companies, including confidentiality agreements, material and data transfer agreements, industry membership and affiliate agreements, and sponsored research agreements. IAO is part of Intellectual Property and Industry Research Alliances (IPIRA), which provides a one-stop shop for industry research partners to interact with UC Berkeley.

The IAO is responsible for the development, negotiation, and implementation of agreements with industry that support campus research activities and facilitate a strong relationship with the corporate sector. Industry related agreements include all agreements related to the support of research by for-profit entities, including sponsored research agreements, industry affiliate agreements, Small Business Innovation and Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) grants, and collaboration agreements. IAO also negotiates all incoming material transfer agreements (MTAs), data use agreements (DUAs), and research related confidentiality agreements (NDAs) for the UC Berkeley campus. IAO conducts outreach to both the campus community and industry sector concerning industry/university relationships, technology transfer and research activities at UC Berkeley.

Uses skills as a seasoned, experienced research administrator to support IAO in all areas of research administration, including triage of proposals and inquiries, referral of new cases, data entry, office management, and team support. The RA will also manage a caseload of MTAs, routine proposals, and subawards, and assists IAO negotiators with standard agreements, including form MTAs, amendments, no cost extensions, and more.

  • Enters and logs new agreements in Phoebe, including MTAs, DUAs, Software License Agreements, and equipment transfer agreements. Enters and logs new NDAs and award records as needed. Completes compliance reviews, including liaising with EH&S, Animal Care and Use Committee, Conflict of Interest, and the Office for the Protection of Human Subjects.
  • Manages IAO email boxes and shared server, triages workload, researches and answers routine process and contract related questions, refers complex problems to IAO staff as needed.
  • Enters incoming requests into the contract and grant system, Phoebe, including MTAs, DUAs, NDAs, and Sponsored Research award records. Receives and triages new proposals to IAO negotiators, and creates indirect cost waiver requests when necessary.
  • Applies contracts and grants concepts to review grant or contract proposals and obtain / verify necessary compliance approvals.
  • Coordinates proposal review of all industry affiliate programs proposals, creates REMS IDC waivers, and creates and routes award records to negotiators.
  • Manages standard MTAs from repositories, such as Addgene and Mutant Mouse Resource and Research Center, from start to finish (receipt, request forms, HHMI coordination, EH&S/ compliance approvals, facilitating MTA approval, and Phoebe award set up and finalization).
  • Provides general support for negotiators, including routine and non-routine support for the IAO Director upon request.
  • Drafts terms and conditions of research amendments from various sponsors.
  • Provides guidance on complex research administration matters, including compliance regulations, to principal investigators and department administrators
  • Authorizes establishment of complex subcontracts and subagreements, including receipt, logging, and triaging subawards, creating folders in the shared drive, performing compliance tasks, drafting subaward documents for negotiators, and distributing and activating subawards once they are fully executed.
  • Provides general office management, including inventory and ordering of supplies, liaising with building management, acting as the floor safety coordinator, sending documents via Federal Express, and other responsibilities as needed.
  • Conducts due diligence on new companies and new prospects upon request.
  • Other duties as assigned, including serving on departmental workgroups, event coordination.

Required Qualifications

  • Understanding of research administration guidelines of Federal and non-Federal sponsors supporting research and educational activities, preferably in a university environment.
  • The ability to learn, understand, interpret, and communicate matters of university policy and research administration concepts to multiple constituencies including faculty, staff, and industry representatives.
  • Ability to manage a significant volume of transactions.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, service orientation, ability to multi-task effectively in a varied, high volume environment, decision-making, reasoning, ability to develop original ideas to solve problems, and effective verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work collaboratively to achieve group goals and objectives.
  • Exercises independent judgment to resolve complex problems and issues. Ability to tolerate ambiguity. Excellent customer service skills and focus across broad and diverse subject areas and constituencies
  • Strong listening, organizational, and political acumen skills.
  • High attention to detail while maintaining focus on the big picture.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree with at least two years of experience in research administration

Salary & Benefits
