Position Summary
The Graduate School of Education at the University at Buffalo is seeking an Academic Advisor to support undergraduate and graduate students in our teacher education programs, including UB Teach which is combined undergraduate/graduate degree program for those interested in a career as a teacher. As the Advisor, you would be responsible for providing a range of support services to students focused primarily on academic planning, program, and course selection for prospective and currently enrolled students. Caseloads will include incoming freshman, transfer students, and continuing undergraduate and graduate students in addition to working with students who are at risk of not completing their degrees.

You will also lead and/or assist with advising-related initiatives that support the overall teacher education program; serve on committees as needed or requested; and represent the Graduate School of Education at events, as needed. The Academic Advisor will report to the Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Teacher Education.

As an Academic Advisor, you will participate in many activities associated with the academic advisement of GSE’s teacher education students which will include but not limited to the following:

Advise and support the successful matriculation of incoming students into all of the GSE teacher education programs. Onboard and counsel transfer students about developmental academic planning; general education and major requirements; evaluation of courses for transfer; class registration and degree tracking; and maintaining successful academic progress. Facilitate students’ transition to updated or new academic programs by providing comparative degree completion analysis.
Regularly meet with students to assess the student’s degree program and their understanding of academic requirements, school/university policies and procedures, and NY state licensure/certificate requirements.
Demonstrate thorough understanding of financial aid concepts and rules to ensure course enrollment requirements are met to maintain the students’ financial aid.
Ensure that student academic records for each advisee accurately reflect their progress in completing requirements by processing Academic Advisement Report (AAR) exceptions or appropriate forms as necessary.
Incorporate direction from Teacher Education leadership regarding managing program specific needs. Work collaboratively with peer and faculty advisors, as well as colleagues in the College of Arts and Sciences.
Maintain relationships with Career Services; Counseling Services; Office of Accessibility Resources; Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion; and related areas regarding referring students for services.
Develop and maintain working knowledge of and effective relationships with student support and other offices inside GSE and across the university to effectively assist students to leverage available supports and successfully navigate potential barriers to success.
Actively engage in events and planning such as New Student Orientations, with some occurring on nights and weekends.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree required.
Two years professional experience working with undergraduate students in a higher education setting.
Able to learn and advise students on curriculum requirements for a wide range of programs, with adherence to confidentiality standards.
Ability to make strategic decisions with students about their coursework and progress toward degree.
Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and verbal and written communication skills.
Able to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
Periodic evening and weekend work required.
The ideal candidate is student-focused, customer-service oriented, and able to thrive in a fast-paced collaborative, creative, and diverse environment.
Computer experience in MS Office (Word, Excel, Access).
Must be able to manage competing priorities, be deadline-driven, and demonstrate a commitment to learning new skills as needed.
Ability to handle confidential information daily; Understand the FERPA laws enacted to protect student privacy and information.

Preferred Qualifications
Master’s Degree
Experience with UB systems (SIRI, HUB, Navigate, etc.) and other applications related to student academic records and student support services strongly preferred.
Experience with UB policies and procedures surrounding undergraduate and/or graduate education.
Experience and expertise in one or more of the following areas: financial aid, data management, and/or admissions.
Understanding of and experience working with College of Arts and Sciences academic programs and student populations.
Experience with academic advising and working on student success initiatives.
Working knowledge of the University academic integrity guidelines.
Working knowledge of undergraduate financial aid rules regarding student registrations.
