Shift: Tues - Sat., 7:00 - 3:30pm

As stewards of Tufts University’s physical environment, the Department of Facilities Services, a department within the university’s Operations Division, strives to provide responsive and cost-effective solutions that support our research and learning mission as well as to enhance the quality of our living and learning experience. Facilities Services is responsible for the maintenance and management of all university grounds and facilities consisting of approximately 5 million square feet of space across four campuses (Somerville/Medford, Grafton, Boston and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts).


Within the Operations Division, a broad range of services are provided to support the university campuses including facility management and maintenance, engineering, capital maintenance, custodial services, energy and utilities systems planning and operations, cogeneration operations, recycling and waste management, residential facilities coordination, event support and grounds aesthetics and maintenance.


Related functions, which require close coordination with this department, are capital programming, public and environmental safety and security, campus planning, design and construction of capital and deferred maintenance projects including major repairs, renovation, and new construction.

What You'll Do

The supervisor for grounds will report directly to the grounds manager. The position will supervise the general campus grounds and athletic fields as assigned. Responsibilities may include but not limited to the natural and synthetic turf, lawns, plantings, trees, mulch beds, storm water management, hardscape including walks, lots, and drives. Supervise assigned employees and manage vehicles, equipment and related duties as assigned. The position will work closely with the Labor shop and the supervisor for recycling and waste reduction. The position will manage the maintenance and service for grounds vehicles and equipment. The position will be expected to provide direct supervision for a team of employees who are performing routine and specialized grounds services including and not limited to, planting, trimming, pruning, watering, mulching, raking, plowing, snow removal, sanding and salting operations. In cooperation with the managers for grounds and labor shops, expected to help with the scheduling and coordination of snow removal operations assigned to university staff and vendors. Assist with the university solid waste reduction and recycling goals and green initiatives and support the university’s carbon reduction program.

What We're Looking For

Basic Requirements:

  • Knowledge and experience typically acquired through the completion of a Two-year associate degree preferably in facilities management or a related field or a high school diploma with a minimum of three (3) years related work experience preferably as a grounds Lead or supervisor.
  • A minimum of two years grounds related supervisory experience supervising 3 or more employees (preferably in a union environment)
  • A minimum of 2 years of direct experience and knowledge with proper usage of various types of grounds vehicles, equipment, tools and products.
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Possess a valid MA pesticide Core applicator’s license
  • Possess a MA 2B hoisting license with in one year of hire date
  • Proven progressive leadership skills and techniques
  • Planning, fiscal, and forecasting experience with an understanding of how to keep costs to a minimum while supplying an excellent service level for campus appearance and safety.
  • Experience and knowledge with the use of battery-operated equipment and tools.
  • Experience processing payroll and employee leave requests
  • Be able to provide strong interpersonal and communication skills that fosters effective working relationships at all levels
  • Comfortable working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word.
  • Ability to navigate Maximo or comparable work order management system (CMMS) experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Job related grounds experience at an institute of higher education or comparable campus-based facility
  • MA commercial pesticide license.

Special Work Schedule Requirements:
Expected to work in very cold and very hot conditions. May be needed to work outside for long periods of time during inclement weather. May be needed to work long shifts during inclement weather, and special events including commencement and reunions. Supervise and support snow removal operations that may occur at any time including weekends, holidays and during off shift hours.
