Technical specialist

For a fixed-term position in the Open Geospatial Information Infrastructure for Research ( project. The goal of the project is to further develop the Geoportti research infrastructure, which is a unique virtual research infrastructure (RI) enabling easy access to geospatial data served from spatial data infrastructures and other sources, and geocomputing solutions for many disciplines using geospatial data. Geoportti RI brings together massive geospatial datasets, high-performance geocomputing and virtualization environments, and aids researchers struggling with poor data usability and scarce computing resources. The RI provides almost 20 services related to geospatial data, equipment, geocomputing, skills development and innovation, and community, and the integrating access point Geoportti Hub.

The technical specialist will join the Aalto Geoinformatics research group, and their work will focus on the development of Geoportti e-learning services for geoinformatics. Together with experts from the Finnish IT centre for science (CSC Finland: and other project partners, Aalto will develop browser-based solutions for running GIS software on top of the CSC cloud services. The cloud-based services will allow users to run desktop GIS software in a browser window as one would in a desktop environment. 

On top of this environment, educational experts in Aalto and other project partner organizations will develop e-learning materials and on-line courses. The technical specialist will participate in developing the processes and environments where the e-learning materials will be used. They will also support the educational experts in developing new e-learning materials and implementing them in the Geoportti environment. Finally, the expert will provide help and technical support when the new materials are piloted with students. 

Who we’re looking for

Successful candidate has experience in GIS, technical writing, and development of software systems. We appreciate experience in development of e-learning materials as well as GIS software development. In addition, experience in cloud environments or the CSC High Performance Computing environment would be beneficial for the position. 

We expect an appropriate degree from a technical field, or similar experience. Previous experience in working with GIS software and geospatial data is considered as an asset. Experience in multi-organization projects and work will also be highly valued.

Salary, terms and conditions

The position is a fixed term contract starting from the year 2022 and extending for approximately 12 months to 2023. 

The technical specialist will work together with the project personnel at Aalto, as well as CSC Finland and other project partners. We value the ability to flexibly work together with experts from various organizations and the ability to take charge of your own work. The primary duties of the technical specialist will consist of supporting the development of the e-learning materials and adding them to the Geoportti environment. In addition, the work will involve assisting CSC in the development of the Geoportti-related learning tools in their systems.

The salary depends on the candidate’s qualifications and experience, and ranges between 3000 and 4000€.
