Departmental Overview

As a central service center for the entire campus, the Graduate Division works to guide and assist students from the moment of admission, through the various milestones of their progress, to the completion of their degree requirements. The division provides academic, personal, diversity, and professional support services vital to the everyday well-being and life-long successes of Berkeley master's, professional, and doctoral students.

Responsibilities

As part of the Graduate Admissions team, the Admissions Recruitment Specialist is responsible for developing and implementing programs for student outreach, recruitment, and admissions. This includes providing in-depth information on admissions requirements and policies to prospective students, departments, schools, and colleges, along with providing feedback and recommendations on improving existing processes.

Key Responsibilities:

55% Outreach, Recruitment, and Communications

  • Manages and implements marketing, recruitment, and yield objectives and strategies, including developing email drip campaigns via Slate, assisting with diversity initiative events, planning outreach programs, creating marketing materials, and similar activities. Represents the Graduate Division to internal and external constituents, as it relates to these efforts.
  • Collaborates with the Office for Graduate Diversity to integrate and advance diversity initiatives.
  • Collaborates with Communications to further recruitment, admissions, and enrollment initiatives and goals.
  • Streamlines Slate communications for prospective students, applicants, and admitted students, and recommends strategies to keep audiences engaged.
  • Analyzes admissions data via Slate queries/reports. Collaborates with and advises departments and schools on outreach strategies and provides recommendations to advance recruitment and enrollment goals.
  • Assists with updating the public-facing Graduate Division Admissions website and integrating feedback from prospective students and internal constituents to clarify admissions requirements, highlight holistic review, and set a warm and welcoming tone.
  • Represents UC Berkeley at recruitment events and travels as needed.


20% Admissions

  • Assesses academic preparedness of traditional, special-program, and international applicants.
  • Evaluates transcripts and international records for eligibility and authenticity, including original and translated transcripts, diplomas, degree certificates of completion or graduation, TOEFL or IELTS scores. Determines if applicants meet Graduate Division requirements for admission.
  • Using internal and online references, conducts independent research to determine the accreditation and recognition of schools and universities and to establish the validity of applicants' earned degrees.
  • Using extensive knowledge of Graduate Division requirements, assesses the applicant's overall record for final admissions determination and processes departments' admissions recommendations via Slate.
  • Updates Slate application, processes, and admissions handbook annually.


20% Advising

  • Advises prospective students, applicants, faculty, staff, and the general public on a broad range of Graduate Division policies and procedures related to application admission in person, by email, and by telephone.
  • Advises on technical questions regarding the online application and resources.
  • Counsels department staff and faculty on policies and procedures related to exceptional admission cases, deferred admissions, requests for additional admission allocations, and waitlists.
  • Advises Graduate Division leadership on best practices and provides information or data regarding historical decisions or precedent-setting actions in regards to atypical circumstances, e.g., off-cycle applications, applicants following newly recruited faculty from other institutions, or exceptions to eligibility for admission.
  • Assists with an annual training program for new department staff.


5% Other duties

  • Provides training, leadership, and guidance to temporary staff on Admissions procedures and policies.
  • Serves on Graduate Division task forces or committees.
  • Keeps abreast of admissions, recruitment, and enrollment trends and best practices via professional development.
  • May supervise student worker(s).


Required Qualifications

  • Thorough knowledge and experience working with a diverse student population.
  • Thorough knowledge of admissions requirements for campus / school / college, including mitigating circumstances / bases for exceptions.
  • Thorough knowledge of tertiary level foreign credentials, secondary school records, study abroad programs and policies, and the knowledge of major educational systems of the world.
  • Ability to interpret and communicate University policies and procedures to prospective students and the public.
  • Ability to develop recruitment programs, and design effective materials.


EDUCATION

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Slate experience preferred.


Salary & Benefits

This is a 100% full-time (40 hrs a week) exempt career position, which is paid monthly and eligible for full UC Benefits.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $66,700.00 to $91,600.00.

Other Information

This is a hybrid position, with up to 40% remote work eligibility. (Monday and Friday remote; Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday in the office).
