The University of Indianapolis seeks applicants for a Manager of Mechanical Systems and Laboratories to support instructional and research laboratory needs in the R.B. Annis School of Engineering. This position is exempt, and requires broad technical knowledge. Duties and responsibilities are not limited to technical expertise. The right applicant will also have experience and interest in curriculum development, training, budget management, operations, and safety maintenance.

Responsibilities: Student and faculty-related duties include assisting faculty and students in brainstorming and supporting research projects, summer camps, and promotional activities as related to mechanical systems, machines, and tools, and assisting students in DesignSpine projects by advising on material selection, fabrication techniques, alternative design solutions, cost-benefit analysis, etc. that leads to feasible designs. This individual will also train and supervise students, faculty, and staff on the effective use of equipment, machines, and tools in the laboratory with the goal of teaching system capabilities and limitations.

Administrative duties include maintaining current files of signed R.B. Annis Code and liability waivers and insuring compliance with code and equipment usage, writing and reviewing procedures of the machine shop and engineering laboratories, ordering all mechanical equipment and supplies for the R.B. Annis School of Engineering, maintaining safety and Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) files and any other records necessary for complete compliance with all regulation and accreditation policies.

Laboratory and safety-related duties include developing DesignSpine processes that involve fabrication, manufacturing, and prototyping, working with a variety of manufacturing and fabrication processes, including machining, forming, welding, composites, and metal casting, working with equipment commonly found in machine shops, wood shops, including (but not limited to) band saws, lathes, milling machines, both manual and Computer Numerical Control (CNC) types, and welding, working with non-traditional machines, such as a waterjet cutter, Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM), injection molder, 3D printers, and laser cutters, and reading and interpreting blueprints and schematics.

Qualifications: In order to be considered, applicants must have at least seven years of experience working with equipment commonly found in machine shops and have obtained an associate’s degree or have completed an equivalent trade school/apprenticeship program. A clean or acceptable driving record is also required for the position. The chosen candidate must be able to occasionally lift more than 70 pounds.
