Applications Developer I will work as part of Housing and Dining Services’ (HDS) team of IT professionals. This position will support the development and web-based custom applications hosted in HDS and the cloud based products. This position reports to the IT Manager who oversees the web development team and software products used by HDS.

The Applications Developer I offers the opportunity to work with both a seasoned team of IT professionals and student developers. The Housing and Dining Services (HDS) IT Team serves a large, diverse department that provides high quality services to strengthen the student experience at Kansas State University. The position reports to the IT Manager and will participate in establishing goals and strategies for the HDS web-based application offerings and to interact with other service oriented, passionate professionals. Work projects provide opportunities to apply honed technical skills and apply creative, viable solutions while interacting with a diverse customer base.

Assist with the administration and support of web and client applications in a distributed multi-server environment.
Monitor web-based application offering regularly for problems, outdated information and adherence to standards. Provide reports to management.
Communicate customer feedback to colleagues and management.
Recommend site enhancements and identifies solutions to problems.
Evaluate new project requests. Design, build, code test and deploy the applications. Maintain existing applications.
Implement best coding practices and mentor student developers to understand current software design patterns coding guidelines.
Serve as a contact person regarding the use of departmental web-based applications, answer questions, and diagnose and resolve customer problems.
Educate customers on issues related to the departmental web-based applications including accessibility and other site standards, current and new web technologies.
Develop methods to facilitate web-based application maintenance for customers.
Develop online and printed documentation for the departmental web-based application servers.
Serve as a customer advocate in the planning processes.
Work with the HDS Helpdesk (ResNet)or/and K-State IT helpdesk to track customer problems and resolutions, and to measure customer satisfaction.
Assist in mentoring, training, hiring and evaluating a multi-person web development team comprised of hourly student staff.
Participate in preparing goals and coordinate strategies for developing and supporting HDS web-based application offering.
Makes measurable contributions to software development efforts.
Provide innovative suggestions to improve existing processes or implement new security measures to improve the security posture of the enterprise.
Participates as a team member to implement new or updated security measures.
Monitor compliance with information security policies and procedures, referring problems to supervisor.
What You’ll Need to Succeed:
Bachelor’s degree and two years of relevant experience.
Bachelor’s degree in MIS, CIS, business administration or related field
3 years experience as an application developer or web developer
Experience with relational databases such as MySQL, SQL Server, Oracle
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Experience in project management; research, planning, development, implementation and support
